Christians celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on Sunday. It lasted fifty days after Easter Pentecost – next to Easter and Christmas – the third largest Christian holiday, its name comes from the Greek word pentecost.
At Pentecost, Christians celebrate three important events: the coming of the Holy Spirit, which Jesus promised in his farewell speech, the founding of the church and the beginning of “missionary work covering the whole world”.
According to the biblical description of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the apostles, after being filled with the Holy Spirit, preached the gospel to everyone in their own language. As a result of the apostle Peter’s preaching, many were converted, thus the church was born at the first Pentecost.
The holiday was originally a harvest thanksgiving for the Jewish people of the Old Testament, and then it became a commemoration of the Mosaic Law.
In 305, the synod of bishops ordered the celebration of the arrival of the Holy Spirit depicted in the form of a dove or tongues of flame.
In the Catholic Church, II. according to the liturgical reform of the Vatican Council, Pentecost is the solemn end of the fifty-day Easter cycle.
