The Pentagon plans to transfer to Israel tens of thousands of 155-mm shells that were intended for Ukraine. About it reports Axios, citing three Israeli officials familiar with the situation.
According to the publication, the Israel Defense Forces and the country’s Ministry of Defense told Washington that they urgently need artillery shells to prepare for a ground operation in Gaza and a possible conflict with Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon.
Axios writes that, according to American officials, the transfer of shells intended for Ukraine to Israel will not have a direct impact on Ukraine’s ability to fight Russian troops.
The publication also notes that the ammunition intended for Ukraine was part of the stockpile of American weapons, which is stored in Israel as part of an agreement between the countries.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant previously statedthat Israeli troops will soon begin a ground operation in the Gaza Strip. According to The Times of Israel, the minister said this during a visit to Israeli military positions on the border of the Gaza Strip.
US President Joe Biden in an interview with CBS saidthat Washington has the ability to provide assistance to both Israel and Ukraine. “We are the United States of America after all. <…> We can take care of them both and still maintain our international defense,” the American president said.
