Trump managed to free up the Pentagon’s budget for the project by declaring the situation at the border an emergency.
Current President Joe Biden announced in January that he would end the construction of the border wall. “In conjunction with the president’s proclamation, the Department of Defense will terminate all border wall construction projects paid for with money originally intended for other military missions,” a Pentagon spokesman said Friday. “Today’s action demonstrates this government’s commitment to defending our country and supporting our military and their families,” added the spokesman.
Trump launched his presidential campaign in 2015 with a promise to build a wall on the US-Mexico border and make Mexico pay for it. Mexico refused, however, and also from the House of Representatives, where the Democrats won the majority in 2018, Trump did not get a cent for his wall. Ultimately, Trump bypassed parliament and made the controversial decision to pay for the wall with Pentagon money, forcing the Department of Defense to release billions of dollars for the project.
