Washington DC –
Pentagon or Department of Defense United States of America (USA) estimates around 2,000 – 4,000 soldiers Russia killed in the military invasion of Ukraine which was launched two weeks ago.
As reported AFPWednesday (9/3/2022), this estimate was delivered when US defense and intelligence leaders gave a stark picture of the Russian President Vladimir Putin aggressive behavior, and the possibility of Putin continuing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine despite global condemnation.
Asked at a House Intelligence Committee meeting how many Russian soldiers died in Ukraine, the director of the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Service, Lieutenant General Scott Berrier, replied: “Between 2,000 and 4,000 (Russian soldiers).”
However, Berrier also called the estimate “low confidence” because it was compiled by combining intelligence sources and open source data.
Russia, in a rare statement on the number of soldiers killed, said on March 2 that 498 of its soldiers had been killed in special military operations in Ukraine. Ukraine believes the number of Russian soldiers killed is higher.
CIA Director William Burns told a US House panel that he believed the war between Ukraine and Russia was a matter of “deep personal beliefs” for Putin.
