GUR has also been developing plans for covert attacks against Russian forces in Syria
Ukrainian military intelligence had been preparing a massive attack on Moscow on the anniversary of the start of hostilities on February 24, but at the insistence of the United States, these plans had to be canceled.
Such information is contained in one of the Pentagon documents leaked on the Internet, writes The Washington Post.
The publication notes that the strikes against the Russian capital were prepared by the Main Intelligence Directorate on the orders of the head of the department Kiril Budanov.
“Major General Kiril Budanov ordered one of his officers to ‘prepare for mass strikes on February 24 with everything the GUR has at its disposal,'” the publication wrote.
In addition, classified Pentagon documents allege that Ukrainian intelligence was considering a strike on the city of Novorossiysk, Russia’s most important port on the Black Sea.
It follows from the documents that GUR “at the request of Washington agreed to postpone the strikes” on Moscow. It is noted that Washington fears an overly aggressive response from the Kremlin to these strikes.
“Ukraine, which seeks to move military action to Russian territory, is sometimes restrained by the United States, which has consistently tried to avoid the escalation of the conflict into a direct confrontation between American and Russian forces,” the publication wrote.
In particular, the Americans fear that Vladimir Putin may perceive such strikes as a major threat and resort to the use of tactical nuclear weapons.
Washington also fears that after massive strikes against Russia, China may start more actively helping Moscow.
Also, the publication, referring to the leaked documents, claims that the GUR allegedly prepared attacks against members of PMC “Wagner” in Mali. The current status of this operation is unknown.
The documents also contain allegations that the GUR was developing plans for covert attacks against Russian forces in Syria using the Kurds. This operation was allegedly forbidden by Zelensky.
“Officials in Washington and Europe have issued a warning to Ukraine over attacks outside its territory that they say have gone too far,” The Washington Post wrote.
