Édouard Philippe went to Rennes, this Thursday 1is July, to meet the readers of West France, as part of the release of his book Clear prints and lines, written with Gilles Boyer. He spoke on this occasion on the pension reform, calling to avoid “A half-reform” before the 2022 presidential election.
The pension reform, which could decide to relaunch Emmanuel Macron, is it necessary?
During the presidential campaign, Emmanuel Macron pledged to merge all the regimes into one, universal, by points, so that when everyone contributes one euro, he has the same rights. Three months later, we learned that we would have a financial problem in the medium term. Since the health crisis, we have an even greater need for financial balance and equity.

Is there an urgency to make this reform by the presidential election in ten months?
We could do this reform now, but also after the presidential election. Because if there is no consensus, it risks blocking. Now, we have to deal with the problem, but without doing a half-reform. But it would be good if we did not make this need to balance the system weigh on young people, who have already suffered more than other categories of the health crisis.
What do you think of the possibility of pushing back the starting age from 62 to 64?
We will not be able to resolve the issue of pensions without going through an increase in the contribution period. All the countries which, like ours, are facing an aging population, have increased it fairly gradually. I know it’s not popular, but if I set myself the goal of being popular, I hit the wall. Popularity is not my compass.
