Pensioners will ride in remote-controlled vehicles. But they won’t be able to drive themselves, it’s too big a risk

It is now an open secret that the European Union is planning to make it impossible for a significant number of people of retirement age to drive. The reason is primarily the effort to ensure maximum safety on the roads, against which seniors behind the wheel stand. They belong to the most important groups causing accidents, often of a very serious nature.

Hits are coming soon

At the same time, the EU’s plan is nothing more than ensuring absolutely safe traffic, when no fatal accidents should occur as early as 2050. However, this means that drivers who have lost important reflexes, or who no longer have the orientation necessary to drive a vehicle, will have to disappear from the roads.

Relatively soon, special tests will be introduced that every senior in the Czech Republic will have to undergo upon reaching the age of 70. Then it will be tested whether it can really still be a full-fledged participant in traffic. If he doesn’t pass the test, his driver’s license will be mercilessly revoked.

There is no need to take this as a harsh measure towards the current seniors. On the contrary, it is a neutral thing that affects absolutely everyone at a given age, so it is not an injustice. Just as a driver’s license is only issued from the age of 18, i.e. a certain starting point for the possibility of driving is set, so the rules will also be set at the other end of the age scale.

The car eats itself

The tests will be repeated every five years. And it is clear how it will probably look. While people in their seventies can still pass for the most part, if an 85-year-old person takes the test, he probably won’t pass it.

However, this may not ultimately mean that seniors will not be able to drive in passenger vehicles. Development is inexorable and so-called autonomous vehicles are on the way, especially in combination with modern electric drives and advanced software. These cars can drive themselves, or they can be remotely controlled, for example, in the first phase.

In fact, it will be a luxury like having your own chauffeur, which most people with a normal car cannot afford. This way, the vehicle will drive for you and you will not have to devote yourself to driving, but to some more useful activities. At the same time, it is assumed that such cars will be completely safe in operation.
