Penny Mordaunt (50) had the eyes of the whole world on her when she carried the almost four-kilogram sword during the coronation of King Charles (74) for an hour.
Mordaunt, leader of the British House of Commons and president of the Royal Council, is the first woman ever to boast such a mission in Britain.
The 50-year-old received a lot of attention on social media, and many expressed admiration for the stoic calm and endurance she showed during the two-hour coronation service on Saturday.
The one sword she carried, a bejeweled clenodium from the 18th century (Sword of State), weighs over 3.6 kilos.
– When I got on my mobile again, I found out that I had become one memememea term for images and videos that are spread on the internet.says Mordaunt i BBC-podkasten «Political Thinking».
The 50-year-old reveals that certain preparations were needed. Although she didn’t hit the gym in the last six months before the event, she made sure she was “in good shape.”
– And I took a couple of painkillers beforehand just to make sure I would do well.
Experience from the navy also came in handy to “keep the balance”.
– In addition, I had eaten a good breakfast, and I made sure I had comfortable shoes.
After handing over the heavy sword to King Charles, minutes before he was crowned, Mordaunt was handed another and lighter sword – the Jeweled Sword of Offering.
This she wore when she led the way for the newly crowned king and the Archbishop of Canterbury towards the end of the ceremony.
The swords were just two of many regalia presented to King Charles. Regalia are symbols of a king or queen’s power and dignity. The crown is the most important regalia.
Mordaunt, a member of the Conservative Party, has previously been junior minister, international development minister and defense minister.
