Earlier in the year we reported that Penny Market had discounted its items by three per cent a month before the new VAT rate came into effect. Lidl boasted that it would add another three per thousand products to the mentioned three percent.

The discount in Lidl is valid from the second of January, thousands of products are discounted by exactly six percent. These include, for example, fish, milk, dairy products, sausages, meat, pastries, but also pet food. The lower VAT rate also started to apply 14 days earlier in Tesco.

“Penny was the first chain to project a 3 percent reduction in VAT on food, which applies from January 1, already from December 1, 2023. However, the prices shown on the price tags remained the same throughout, and customers received a discount when paying at the cash register,” he said formerly for PrahaIN.cz, the chain’s press spokesman Tomáš Kubík.

Penny Market also offered our editors specific discounts on some products. For example, krystal sugar became cheaper by 73 pennies, semi-skimmed milk by 52 pennies and a roll by 8 pennies.

Since the New Year, food has been subject to the new unified VAT rate of 12 percent, currently it is in the first reduced rate of 15 percent. But who would have expected that…

Ten percent off entire purchase

The chain has prepared something extra for its customers for the first working week of this year.

“Because we know that the beginning of the year is not always easy, we have a gift for you that will surely make the first week of the year easier for you,” wrote Penny Market on its websites. Those who have a Penny card and a special coupon can apply an additional ten percent discount on their entire purchase from January 2nd to January 7th.

From the menu, we were most interested in the chicken breast steaks, which were discounted from 223.90 crowns to 89.90 crowns. Those who also used a coupon and a Penny card paid 80.90 crowns for one kilogram of chicken cutlets. We haven’t seen them for a similar price for several years.

But we haven’t seen them even now. And no other customers besides us.

PrahaIN.cz visited three branches on Wednesday afternoon. Not even one chicken breast was on it.

On Thursday, when the promotion was no longer valid, the shelves were full, but the meat cost significantly more.

The fact that meat could not be found was also addressed by customers on social networks.

“The ten percent discount also applies to discounted and promotional products, so we will additionally deduct 10 percent from customers at checkout, including the chicken breasts you mentioned. Since the capacity of the cooling racks is limited, the employees replenish the goods during the day,” said Tomáš Kubík from Penny Market for PrahaIN.cz.

The difference with Lidl

Although we did not find chicken breasts in the stores, we noticed that the number of people who showed the coupon at the register was huge. Customers can find it in the leaflet, on the website or in the mobile application.

Almost everyone showed proof at the checkout with a discount. We noticed an elderly lady lending out her reusable coupon to customers in front of her. “You get ten percent off, you have a big purchase,” she handed out a clipping from the flyer. Thanks to this, the man saved almost two hundred.

We asked the cashier if this was an exception. “Definitely not, people have them almost every time they shop,” she told us.

On October 1, we commemorated the International Day of Senior Citizens. And it was on this occasion that the new cooperation between the Council of Senior Citizens and the company started…

“Our customers appreciate the ten percent discount on the entire range and we have very positive reactions. The interest of customers is great,” Kubík confirmed to our editors.

It was a huge change compared to Lidl, which had already come up with a ten percent discount for seniors several times. But they had to prove themselves with an ID with a photo and date of birth. In addition, the discount only applied to selected goods.
