Former US Vice President Mike Pence lashed out this Saturday at former President Donald Trump, assuring that “history will hold him responsible” for the assault on the United States Capitol.
“President Trump was wrong. He had no right to overturn the (2020) election result and his reckless words endangered my family and everyone on Capitol Hill that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable,” the former vice president declared during a speech reported by the US media.
Pence has described January 6, 2021, the date on which a violent mob of Trump supporters attacked the headquarters of the US Congress, as “a tragic day.”
Likewise, he has stressed that “tourists do not injure 140 policemen when they are sightseeing”, nor “do they break down doors to reach the president of the Chamber or make threats against public officials”.
He has indicated his interest in presenting his candidacy
Trump has already announced his candidacy to return to the White House in the 2024 elections, but Pence – who has not made a formal announcement so far – has hinted on Saturday his interest in running.
“I will wholeheartedly and unreservedly support the Republican candidate for the Presidency in 2024… if it’s me,” he declared, as reported by the Bloomberg agency.
These statements are the most direct public criticism made by the former vice president of Trump, holding him responsible for the acts committed, after describing how he had to hide, as indicated by security, from the assailants.
