After the ruling of the Court of Major Penalties, which punished Peñarol with six dates without using his field and the loss of two points after what happened against Malvín, the Table of the Uruguayan Basketball Federation reported that the sanction will apply to the Uruguayan League 2022-23so the aurinegro will not be eliminated from the semifinals in which he is 1-0 up in the series with Aguada.
The conflict
Penarol was imposed before Malvín last Tuesday in the fifth duel for the quarterfinals. This Monday the aurinegro began with the right request in this phase by defeating Aguada, although after the victory he received notification of the Court’s ruling that overshadowed the atmosphere of celebration. Before the player, the end was hot, because discussions between players made the referees retire to the locker room with four seconds left to end the match. For this reason, the aurinegro was sanctioned, initially, with six court closing dates and the loss of two points.
For a few hours Peñarol was in danger of being left out of the semifinals, although at first it was not believed that this resolution would be reached and everything indicated that Mirasol’s two points would be withdrawn at the start of the 2022-23 Uruguayan League, as it finally happened.
The doubt about its continuity came to light when article 92.1 of the Regulations was called into question, which says that “the loss of points will matter the discount of those obtained. When this is not possible, for any reason, the deduction will be made in the future points in dispute, even from the next tournament, until the sanction imposed is reached. This will happen, whether it is due to the end of the championship, or even when it starts”.
Later it adds: “In the event that the sanctioned institution participates in eliminatory series —Playoff, or the denomination that each Council adopts for this purpose— the sanction of this article implies the loss of the series in dispute.”
Next match
The semifinals will continue on Thursday with the second duel of Trouville-Biguá and on Friday the aurinegros and rojiverdes will see each other again starting at 9:15 p.m. on Avenida San Martín.
