The public prosecutor at the Libreville Court of First Instance André Patrick Roponat, recalled Wednesday, July 26, 2023, the various sanctions awaiting the perpetrators of violence during this electoral period.
André Patrick Roponat, drew up the list of sanctions incurred by the perpetrators of violence and their accomplices. For the prosecutor, the penalties provided for by law vary from 1 year imprisonment to life imprisonment, with fines ranging from 100 million FCFA. These include intentional assault and battery; intentional assault and battery resulting in death without intention to give it; destruction and damage to property; arson ; armed mob; provocation or direct incitement to an armed or unarmed mob either by speech made publicly or in writing or printed matter distributed; provocation or propaganda of disobedience to the security and defense forces.
To these are added, participation in propaganda with a view to inciting civil disobedience; dissemination or reproduction of false news or false claims; the rebellion ; insulting the depositaries of authority and public force; sabotage by destruction, deterioration or misappropriation of any document, material, construction, equipment, installation… when this fact is likely to harm the fundamental interests of the Nation.
To avoid falling under one of these sanctions, the public prosecutor invited political actors and members of civil society to show restraint and responsibility for the preservation of social peace. In addition, he recalled, the civil liability of parents who are responsible for minor children who have committed an offense will be engaged. It should be remembered that forms of violence have already been recorded during the pre-campaign meetings of certain opposition candidates.
