PEN America Provides Cyberbullying Defense Manual

« Cyberbullying constitutes a desire to undermine press freedom and to muzzle creative expression. As an organization of writers and for writers, PEN America is committed to working with our partners in West Africa, Europe and around the world to ensure that writers, journalists, artists and human rights activists can make their voices heard Said Viktorya Vilk, Director of Digital Security and Freedom of Expression Programs at PEN America in a press release.

the Manuel is specially designed for French-speaking content creators in West Africa and across the continent, as well as in Europe, North America and the Caribbean – including those facing abuse by governments, organized crime, special interest groups and “trolls”.

First released in the English language in 2018, this version is a second international adaptation, following the launch of a Spanish version earlier this year. The objective is therefore now to reach an international majority.

Advice and good practices

« Journalists, fact-checkers, and writers are more than ever facing cyberstalking that aims to intimidate them and hinder their work. That’s why Code for Africa is proud to join PEN America to create a resource that offers practical advice tailored specifically for the region. This allows us to respond as a community and help all voices be heard. Said Amanda Strydom, Senior Program Manager, CivicSignal and Engagement at Code for Africa.

This Manuel offers practical advice on various abusive tactics. And while it’s mostly dedicated to writers and journalists, most of this advice is valid for anyone who wants to learn how to defend themselves online. The Manual includes a glossary of cyberbullying tactics, adapted strategies with a guide, tips, and much more to defend yourself in the best possible way.

While cyberstalking has long been viewed as a less violent threat than physical threats, its impact is actually considerable: “ Daily life, mental health, freedom of expression and links to online violence Are just a sample of the dangers encountered. In addition, 73% of women journalists are affected by cyberstalking, a figure shared by a global survey conducted by UNESCO and the ICFJ.

« Women’s voices online are ringing louder than ever, it’s an unprecedented breakthrough, but online gender violence remains a major security concern. Content creators and journalists alike need the Internet to be a safer place. Tools like this unique resource from PEN America will help us respond to online attacks and feel collectively supported ”Said Rose Lukalo, Editor-in-Chief at PesaCheck.
