Will Jakarta Go Twice? Youth Group Pledges Support for Ridwan Kamil in Potential Runoff
As Jakarta awaits the official results of its gubernatorial election, youth group Pemuda Pancasila (PP) DKI Jakarta has declared its readiness to secure a win for candidate Ridwan Kamil and his running mate Suswono (RIDO).
“We are confident this election will proceed to a second round because, based on quick count data, no candidate has secured more than 50 percent of the vote,” stated Shaquille Rekardianto, Head of Youth Affairs for PP DKI Jakarta and also Chair of the Student, Pupil and Student Association (SAPMA) PP DKI, in a statement released on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
“In a second round, PP DKI will continue to champion Ridwan Kamil and Suswono until the very end.”
While waiting for the official count from the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD), Shaquille urged all Jakartans to respect the final results when announced.
“If there is indeed a second round, I call on all Jakarta residents, especially young people, to participate actively in the voting process,” he said. “The future of Jakarta depends on the voices of its citizens."
This statement comes amidst anticipation as the KPUD gears up for the official announcement. Jean Wahyu Dinata, Head of KPUD DKI Jakarta, confirmed that the results will be revealed no later than December 16, 2024, following a detailed re-capitolization process.
"Re-capitulation at the subdistrict level will take place from November 28 to December 3, followed by re-capitulation at the district/city level from December 5 to 7," he explained. "The process will culminate with re-capitulation and determination of results at the provincial level from December 9 to 11, with the final announcement scheduled from December 10 to 16."
Meanwhile, Basri Baco, Secretary of RIDO’s campaign team, emphasized the importance of patience as the official counting process unfolds.
“According to the law, the final and binding decision will come from the KPUD,” Baco stressed. “We should avoid premature claims of victory as it can lead to misleading public opinion.”
He also underscored the distinction between quick count results and the official re-capitulation conducted by KPUD.
"Quick count and real count are not official tools for vote calculation. They are susceptible to errors like data entry mistakes," Baco cautioned. "Only the KPUD’s multi-stage re-capitulation process, starting from polling stations to the provincial level, is legally recognized as the definitive count."
As Jakarta awaits the unveiling of its future, the campaign trail heats up, with candidates and supporters keeping a keen eye on the approaching deadline. The city holds its breath, poised for a decision that will shape its destiny for years to come.
