Former legendary footballer Pelé announced on Thursday that he would stay “a few days” in hospital for a “new series of examinations” after having undergone a chemotherapy session to treat a colon tumor detected in September.
“Today, I followed my last (chemotherapy) session of the year 2021 (…) I will take the opportunity to do a new battery of exams, so I will stay here a few days”, explained the 81-year-old Brazilian on Instagram.
In the photo that illustrates this message, Pelé appears smiling, on a hospital bed, his fist raised, as when he was celebrating his goals.
“Don’t worry, I’m just getting ready for the holiday season,” the three-time world champion concluded.
On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, one of his daughters, Kely Nascimento, had indicated, also on Instagram, that his father could return home “in two or three days”.
Yesterday Wednesday, the Albert-Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, where Pelé, 81, had spent a month in September, explained that he had returned to this medical establishment to undergo “chemotherapy” and that his state of health was “stable”.
“There is no surprise, it was planned (that he returns to the hospital), it is part of the treatment,” said Kely Nascimento, who lives in New York, but was at his father’s bedside in September.
On September 4, Pelé was operated on at the same hospital to remove a tumor in his colon detected during routine examinations. He then stayed for ten days in an intensive care unit, before returning briefly a few days later due to breathing difficulties.
Very few official medical bulletins have been published since the detection of this tumor.
But the communication service around Pelé and his daughter have multiplied the publications on social networks to give a reassuring image of the triple world champion, always appearing smiling in photos and videos, despite obvious fatigue.
The health of the legendary number 10 of the Seleçao has been fragile in recent years, with several hospitalizations. In 2019, he was hospitalized in Paris and then transferred to Sao Paulo for kidney stones.
