Pegasus. Paweł Kukiz wants an investigative commission. It’s about wiretaps

  • – The main goal of the commission would be to investigate the possibility and high probability of abuse of wiretaps by the services, and not only deal with the Pegasus program (…) – said Kukiz
  • – Today I just want to return to the idea of Grzegorz Schetyna and PO, which can be briefly described: “let’s study all the parties, not just one” – he added
  • – I will try to convince everyone to collect a sufficient number of signatures – said the politician. “The proposal is prepared and I am open to comments from all parliamentary political options,” he added

According to the draft resolution that Kukiz intends to submit, the work of the commission would cover the period from November 5, 2007 to December 31, 2021, i.e. both the rule of Law and Justice and the two terms of the government of the Civic Platform and PSL.

– The main goal of the committee would be to investigate the possibility and high probability of abuse of wiretaps by the services, and not only deal with the Pegasus program, and therefore we want the committee’s period of interest to be extended to 2007-2021 – says the politician. – The point is that the committee should deal with the problem and not be an instrument for pre-election political struggle – he stressed.

The leader of Kukiz’15 declared that he would not sign the project that would investigate the problem of wiretaps during the governments of either the PO or PiS. – It is not about sympathizing with one side or the other, because I sympathize with the citizens and with Poland, and not with PiS or the Platform. So if we are to investigate the problem of wiretapping in a committee, we either investigate both, or not at all, he emphasized.

Kukiz: I want to return to Schetyna’s idea

The politician also recalled that in 2016 the minister-coordinator of the secret services Mariusz Kamiński informed that the audit carried out in the secret services showed that 48 journalists were under surveillance by the Internal Security Agency during the PO-PSL government, and in response to the reports, the Civic Platform club submitted a draft resolutions on the establishment of “an investigative commission to investigate cases of possible illegal surveillance of journalists in 2005-2016”.

Then – as Kukiz reminds – his club declared its support. – Today I just want to return to the idea of Grzegorz Schetyna and the Civic Platform, which can be briefly described: “let’s study all the parties, not just one” – said Kukiz.

A draft resolution on the appointment of an investigative committee may be submitted by the Presidium of the Sejm or at least 46 deputies, and the Kukiz’15-Direct Democracy group consists of four deputies.

Kukiz declares that he intends to talk to everyone about supporting his initiative. – I talked about support for this initiative with the leader of Poland 2050 Szymon Hołownia, I want to talk to PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński, PSL chairman Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Covenant leader Jarosław Gowin, chairman of the New Left Włodzimierz Czarzasty, the Confederation and Polish Civic Affairs circle, and he said. “I will try to convince everyone to collect enough signatures,” he added.

“The proposal is prepared and I am open to comments from all parliamentary political options,” said Kukiz. – For me, the most important is the problem of wiretaps as such, the problem of a high probability of abusing operational techniques, and not the specificity of one of them – he emphasized.

Pegasus in Poland

Last month, the US news agency Associated Press reported, referring to the findings of the Citizen Lab group operating at the University of Toronto, that the Pegasus software developed by the Israeli company NSO Group was under surveillance by KO senator Krzysztof Brejza, lawyer Roman Giertych and prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek.

According to Citizen Lab, Krzysztof Brejza’s phone was to be hacked 33 times between April 26, 2019 and October 23, 2019. The politician was then the chief of staff of the KO before the parliamentary elections. Canadian researchers, however, were unable to pinpoint who exactly was behind the spying, but stressed that the only customers of the Israeli company are government agencies.

The matter of surveillance of people using the advanced Pegasus system has aroused great controversy in recent weeks. From the latest SW Research survey for “Rzeczpospolita” shows that 42.9 percent. of respondents want to establish a committee of inquiry in connection with reports of possible abuses. The opposite opinion is shared by 20 percent. respondents, while 37.1 percent. respondents have no opinion on this matter.

The purchase of Pegasus was to be covered by the Justice Fund, which is subordinated to the Ministry of Justice. From the available information, it appears that it may have taken place unlawfully.
