Rehabilitation can help. Its goal is to promote work and functional ability and to support well-being and coping. Best of all, the rehabilitation organized by Kela is free of charge!

Located in the heart of Northern Savo, the spa hotel Kunnonpaikka offers versatile rehabilitation and therapy services based on long experience and strong professionalism. The activity has been organized for 50 years already – Kunnonpakai’s patron saint Urho Kekkonen laid the foundation stones of the place!

The unique environment can make rehabilitation periods feel like mini-vacations – for example, this is what rehabilitation can look like at Kunnonpaika!

The spa hotel Kunnonpaikka is located in the beautiful and versatile surroundings of Kallaveti.

A customized program and support from a professional team

Rehabilitation consists of different stages, says Kunnonpaika’s physiotherapist Miika Heiskanen. The rehabilitation courses consist of close rehabilitation sessions at Kunnonpaika and independent rehabilitation at home. Distance rehabilitation is also used in some of the courses.

– The courses are implemented according to the needs of both individuals and the entire group. The groups always include a team of professionals, says Heiskanen.

The rehabilitation in the courses is comprehensive. The courses provide guidance on your own well-being, living with your illness and coping with everyday life. Tips for promoting your own health are also offered.

Mainly, the entire rehabilitation course takes about a year, during which the professional is in regular contact with the rehabilitator. There are also shorter adaptation training courses of only 5 days.

In the short term, participants receive a ready-made rehabilitation program that is easy to follow.

In rehabilitation groups, the program is adapted to the wishes and needs of the clients.

Overcoming fears with heart disease courses

Cardiologist, nurse, physiotherapist, physical therapist, nutritionist and social worker provide support and information during the cardiac rehabilitation course. The course provides guidance, counseling and information on living with heart disease and adapting to the disease.

According to Miika Heiskanen, the groups’ physiotherapist, heart diseases are often associated with states of fear, overcoming which is one of the most important things during rehabilitation periods.

– My parts can consist of listening to my own feelings and lifestyle instructions. I encourage the members of the group to try a variety of sports. Many have found it good that they can test their own limits in a safe environment, says Heiskanen.

He especially emphasizes Kunnonpäki’s wonderful setting for trying sports. For example, there are seven pools, four gyms, a large gym with group classes and a laser fighting arena under the same roof.

– You can try almost any sport with us and we often test them with the whole group. We have gone, for example, on ice skating trips, snowshoeing and in the water, both in our wonderful pools and in the summer in the lake for snorkeling. Working together and hustling support rehabilitation.

Working together and experimenting can spark the spark of exercise in your everyday life as well.

Coping at work in KIILA vocational rehabilitation

The goal of Kiila rehabilitation is to improve work ability and support staying in working life. Occupational physiotherapist Outi Luostarinen says that the rehabilitation includes themes of both personal and work well-being.

– There may be challenges in coping at work, the job description has changed or illness affects the ability to work. You may also need help with the constantly changing demands of working life, says Luostarinen.

Initially, goals are created for the clients, the development of which is monitored throughout the rehabilitation. The work in the short courses is active: lectures by professionals, functional activities and discussion groups are part of the course.

Kiila rehabilitation has three short-term sessions and remote rehabilitation.

In Kiila rehabilitation, professionals, employee, employer and occupational health care work together.

– Intermediate contact sessions are video calls, during which exercises are done together, instructions are given, or we are activated to think about how it would be worthwhile to change everyday life from now on, says Luostarinen.

The employer is also involved in the process. We cooperate with supervisors and occupational health care.

– For example, we thought about how we could support coping in the workplace. The customer’s work can be lightened or the job description modified.

Support and strength for everyday life with rheumatic and cancer adaptation training courses

People with rheumatism and psoriatic arthritis may not be able to do what they would like to do in their everyday life, says the nurse at Kunnonpaika Jenni Marin. The disease has both good and bad periods, which tests strength and endurance.

The rheumatism course may include, for example, body stimulation.

– A person may have had to give up, for example, a beloved sport. Sleeping, recovery and free time can also suffer, says Marin.

– In rheumatism courses, the team consists of, among other things, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a nurse. In groups led by a nurse, we think together with clients about ways to support good lifestyles and control pain, he continues.

The lives of cancer patients can also be changed in one fell swoop. Cancer adaptation training courses review ways to cope with the disease in everyday life.

The fitness center offers rehabilitation for people with prostate or breast cancer, for example. You can come to some of the courses together with a loved one.

– In the cancer adaptation training course, the role of the group instructor is to walk alongside the clients. We think together about which things help us cope in everyday life and how we could maintain them, says Marin.

The best thing about Marin is to notice that the customer’s mood has changed during the course.

– Many say that they feel completely different than when they arrived at the course. They have received snacks and tools for everyday life, and they have the feeling that now it is good to continue, says Marin.

Lifelong friends with the power of a happy team

At the fitness center, those rehabilitating are in good hands. The teams have been praised for their great attitude, genuineness and having time for everyone. The laughter of the staff has also caught the attention of customers.

– One of my clients said that it’s wonderful that we don’t blame or ask why you don’t do things this way or that, but we encourage and we are truly supportive, Luostarinen smiles.

– We have a relaxed and safe atmosphere and a customer-oriented approach, says Marin.

According to experts, peer support is one of the most significant benefits of rehabilitation. Tips and experiences shared with others are empowering.

– Many have made lifelong friends from the courses, says Heiskanen.

Outi Luostarinen, Miika Heiskanen and Jenni Marin are passionate professionals.
