Peek at the Importance of Proper Nutrition in Kidney Patients

JAKARTA Kidneys are one of the most important organs in the body. Not only is it known as its function to remove water that is no longer needed through urine, but also removes other substances such as electrolytes, metabolic wastes from food and drugs, and so on.

Unfortunately, unhealthy kidneys make these organs unable to function properly and cause many diseases.

One of the most common diseases is chronic kidney disease. Namely, a health condition that is caused by a permanently decreased kidney function and has been going on for three months or more.

Not to mention, there are problems with nausea in chronic kidney patients, such as nausea. Nausea occurs when toxins that should be excreted through the kidneys cannot be excreted and accumulate in the blood vessels to the oral cavity and cause nausea.

As a result, the appetite of kidney patients is reduced due to the smelly poison which can also cause stress. Kidney patients are also prone to experience weight loss and malnutrition.

If malnutrition occurs, then the condition of kidney patients can worsen or get worse.

In fact, they should need proper nutrition. Meanwhile, the nutritional needs, especially protein, in kidney patients are different and quite unique.

There are a number of differences in protein intake between patients with chronic kidney disease. Those who are on pre-dialysis or have not required dialysis, need a protein diet to maintain kidney function.

Meanwhile, patients who are already on dialysis need a high protein intake so that during dialysis, the protein in the body can also be wasted.

“Kidney patients are unique, they cannot be given arbitrary supplements, arbitrary milk. Because later the protein will be high for pre-dialysis patients or vice versa for dialysis patients. So, choose nutritional supplements that are tailored to their kidney disease in order to meet their daily nutritional needs,” said Medical General Manager of Kalbe dr. Dedyanto Henky Saputra, M.Gizi in his statement, Wednesday (16/3).

Therefore, dr. Dedyanto recommends that kidney patients can continue to meet nutritional needs that are tailored to their conditions, both pre-dialysis and dialysis.

That way, deterioration in kidney patients can be avoided. Also consult the nutritional calculation needed with your doctor or nutritionist, so you can find out what kind of nutritional intake is right. Because, basically everyone’s body needs are different.
