The Government of Pedro Sánchez, this morning, October 22, 2024, changed the election and composition of the RTVE Council by decree. In that sense, the public body becomes exclusively part of its own political platform rather than the PSOE itself, and excludes from the environment the other partners, which are the conservative Popular Party (PP) and the right-wing VOX.
In addition, Sánchez skyrockets public spending by increasing the number of members of the body from 10 to 15, increasing the number of councilors elected by Congress to 11 and leaving those of the Senate at 4.
On Sánchez’s side, he justifies this measure to “put away the ‘hoaxes’ of the extreme right.” He does this in the midst of corruption scandals that involve him with officials from the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro and corrupt businessmen from the South American country.
According to the newspaper The Spanish «This change will not only allow the Government to secure a large majority in the Council, but also give entry to all its government partners: PNV, Junts, ERC, Podemos, Sumar, BNG and even EH Bildu, which will undoubtedly take advantage his hypothetical presence in the Council to ‘supervise’ the story that Spanish public television makes about ETA’s terrorism,” the Iberian media stated.
With this, Sánchez ensures a means of official state propaganda for himself and those he considers allies of the government.
This strategy is similar to when Hugo Chávez used seized media to divert attention when he was in power, as well as Rafael Correa who used an entire state machine to create an official government agenda through public and seized channels.
