Pedro Sánchez announced his decision during a speech in front of his official residence. The Socialist Prime Minister began by explaining why he announced in an open letter to the population last Wednesday that he might resign.
If we simply accept “random, personal attacks in politics” or “hatred and the crudest lies”, then “it no longer makes sense to me”, he said. “This is not about ideology, but about respect and dignity,” the prime minister emphasized.
In his letter last week, Sánchez talked about a years-long intimidation campaign from the (far) right, which made him wonder whether there was any point in continuing. However, after a 5-day reflection period with his wife and family (during which he canceled almost all his appointments), he decided to stay on, “to defend democracy” and “if possible with more force” than before .
