Pedro Sanchez does not recognize Edmundo Gonzalez as president of Venezuela – 2024-09-13 23:41:28

Although the Popular Party and right-wing groups united to defend Edmundo González and recognize him as the president-elect of Venezuela in Congress, the PSOE and Sumar, with their allies, announced that they will not recognize him as Venezuelan president.

Culture Minister Ernest Utasun said that “the political asylum given to González Urrutia in Spain does not mean recognizing him as president, which is what the Popular Party is proposing. That was already done with Guaidó and it was a failure,” the government official said.

Utasun also said that what is happening in Venezuela is not an internationally recognized process, so it cannot be awarded “to a winner.” He also avoided calling Maduro a dictator.

The PP, for its part, said that it was irresponsible for the government to have the Culture official meddle in international affairs.

The opposition questions Sánchez’s failure to provide guarantees to Edmundo González, where parties such as VOX even denounced that the PSOE is not providing guarantees to González Urrutia and fear that he will be handed over to Maduro as the far-left group PODEMOS wants.
