Pedro Sánchez announces “rental bonus for young people”

Madrid., The massive demonstration last Sunday in Madrid, in which thousands of young people and vulnerable families demanded a response to the structural housing problem, provoked a first reaction from the president of the Spanish government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, who announced the creation of a “rental bonus for young people” that will have an initial budget of 200 million euros (four billion pesos).

The Spanish president, in power for almost seven years, approved a housing law last year that so far has not reversed either the upward spiral in rental and sale prices or the deficit in supply, in addition to Spain is currently the country in the European Union (EU) that invests the least in public housing despite it being one of the most pressing problems.

In the midst of the serious case of corruption that affects his government, President Sánchez announced that his administration has as “a priority” the problem of access to housing for the youngest and low- and middle-income families.

He did not respond to requests for the resignation of his Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, whom they point out as responsible for having drafted an insufficient and ineffective law, but he did announce a plan of 200 million to help pay the rent of the most youths. It will be a plan similar to the one in force, the “cultural bonus”, and which aims to promote the consumption of culture in the younger population, whether through books, theater, cinema and even video games.

Sánchez also announced that his government will work on a “regulation against fraud in seasonal rentals, which is a formula similar to vacation rentals, in addition to “strong measures” to avoid “a Spain with rich owners and poor tenants.”
