For some, Christmas is a working day like any other. This is the case for health professionals. So, at L’archer 2 hospital in Nice, the staff of the pediatric oncology department do their best to bring smiles and joy to their young patients.
This Monday, Santa Claus came to L’archet 2 hospital in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). Objective: to bring balm to the hearts of little sick people on this holiday…
In the corridors of the pediatric oncology department, Christmas music.
Two nurses accompany Anaïs, 9 years old. The little girl has cancer and struggles to move around.
She found the strength to leave her room to see the man dressed all in red. Sitting on her wheelchair, she unwraps the gift she received: a board game board.
“It’s beautiful !“, she said, clutching the box to her. “I’m going to play with dad, mom and my brother.“We can see his smile behind his surgical mask.
On this special day, the caregivers went out of their way to transform the department into a warm place: music, decorations, tree, papillotes…
Johanna Rau is spending her first Christmas as a caregiver in this department.
We support sick children who are not at home. We try to bring them a little joy and happiness. Coming to work for them is a joy!

Activities that boost morale and help you forget the pain in the middle of chemotherapy treatments and its side effects. This year, three children out of the seven in the service were able to obtain leave.
“Those who are hospitalized for Christmas are those for whom there was absolutely no possibility of postponing their treatments.“, explains Joy Benabida, onco-pediatrician-hematologist. “These are the ones who have a fever, don’t yet have enough immune defenses to be at home… For them, it’s compulsory Christmas in the hospital.“
Little Yanis, 6 years old, has just been able to go out for the day. Just before, he unwraps his gift: a huge teddy bear!
“I was quite surprised that he could come and celebrate Christmas at his grandmother’s house.“, said Yanis’ mother. “I am moved to see all the attention given to the children and my son!“
Another mother adds: “I think what’s being done here is extraordinary! Everything is in place so that children can keep joy in their hearts!“
Some children spend several months here or go back and forth between home and the hospital.
