Some time ago we referred to the subject of the unexpected death of the infant that goes hand in hand with remembering the recommended measures for the safe dream At this stage of life. Today it was time to stop at it.
Many parents and caregivers say they know the measures to which we will refer today but in many cases the knowledge is not accompanied by action. Spreading the recommendations does not seem to be enough, but it is important to do so.
The American Academy of Pediatrics updates them every so many years and within them consider:
* The babies must to sleep in the same room as the parents, for at least the first 6 months of life and ideally for the first year.
* They should not share the same bed with them. They can do it in beds together or co-sleeping cribs, adjacent or on their own cribs.
* Parents should never place the baby on a sofa, armchair or cushioned seat, either to to sleep alone or with another person.
* The baby should to sleep on your back, face up, on a firm mattress such as a crib and with loose sheets.
* Keep the arms of the babies outside the covers
* The cradle It must not contain toys or pillows, it must be empty.
* Do not overheat the environment
* Avoid exposing it to smoke cigarettes, alcohol O drugs
* Exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months.
* Use of pacifier in order to to sleep (after having managed to strengthen the lactation)
* They do not recommend monitors or commercial devices such as promoted baby positioning pillows to reduce the risk of sudden death syndrome.
* The only way a baby is on his tummy is to be supervised by someone who is attentive
* Vaccines current.
Promote a suitable feeding Breastfeeding and accompanying parents in the process of adapting to the change generated by the arrival of the newborn, is an optimal way to generate the support that their children usually need in these first months of life.
The pediatricians we must have an active role in promoting healthy sleep habits for the newborn and infant. We must be prepared to respond to parents’ concerns about practices related to dream of their children, who often differ from what we consider appropriate.
As in all the other prevention measures that we have discussed, we cannot force them to be followed, but our obligation is clearly to reiterate them in each consultation, fundamentally in the first 6 months of life.
Until next time.
