A long trail of blood on the asphalt of the province of Salerno. The escalation of accidents – often fatal – that have been recorded in recent years seems to have no end. And, among the various facets of this emergency, there are those who seem to be more at risk. These are pedestrians who, unfortunately at a rhythmic rate, are victims of accidents that shatter lives. The numbers of this plague are truly frightening, in the Salerno area, in Campania as well as throughout Italy. To give an idea of what is happening in 2024 are the numbers from the Pedestrian Observatory curated by Asaps and Sapidata elaborated on the basis of data provided by Istat: in fact, throughout the country in 2023 there were 485 fatal accidents per day, more than one every twenty-four hours. A situation that has certainly not improved during the first part of this year: in the first half of 2024, in fact, there were 198 fatal accidents on Italian roads, seven more than those recorded in the same period of 2023.
«This is proof that the situation on Italian roads is getting worse. In July, a pedestrian died every day“, the bitter consideration of the association Supporters and Friends of the Highway Police. “The first half of this year had already confirmed that pedestrians are the most defenseless road users, especially when they are elderly.“, the evidence after processing the data provided by the National Institute of Statistics. And, in this critical situation, Campania and the province of Salerno unfortunately record terrifying numbers. In the territory of “terra felix”in fact, since the beginning of the year there have been well 26 Pedestrian Tragedies who have lost their lives after being hit: only Lazio (29) and Lombardy (34) are worse. And of these 26 episodes (practically four every month), consulting the interactive map made available by Asaps that monitors the situation in real time and reports the most serious cases that have occurred in the current year, five have been recorded in the province of Salerno.
The first tragedy in chronological order was last February 10th when the 63 year old Anthony Cosenza he was mowed down by a car on the provincial road 30 at the height of Santa Cecilia, in the municipal territory of Eboli. Then on April 13th a new tragedy in Cava de’ Tirreni when a truck hit the 68-year-old Beehive Rose in via Salsano, in the hamlet of Pregiato. Three other tragedies, however, in recent months: on May 17, again in Eboli, this time on the coastal road, a 36-year-old Moroccan national lost his life after being hit by a car. The other two tragic episodes also reported by Asaps are very recent news: on July 28, in fact, the 49-year-old John Ambruosi Futani he lost his life on the Cilentana, at the height of the San Severino junction Centolahit by a car while he was getting out of his vehicle to help the driver of a broken-down car. On August 9, however, the 72-year-old originally from Verona lost his life Joseph Popehit while crossing the pedestrian crossing of the State Road 18, between I know e Villammare.
