Pearl Jam commemorates fans who died in concert in Denmark NOW

Pearl Jam commemorates the nine young men who died in oppression twenty years ago at a concert by the band at the Danish festival Roskilde. The American band hopes to never have to feel the pain of the parents themselves.

On the website of the American band, guitarist Stone Gossard, on behalf of the entire band, thinks back to June 30, 2000. According to Gossard, the lives of the band members have changed forever since the concert at Roskilde.

During the performance, the band received a request from the organization to push back the crowd, but then the fatal tribulations had already occurred.

A crowd of 50,000 festival-goers pushed towards the stage, while people who were all the way in the front slipped on the muddy ground. A pit formed in the bustle, into which the people who slipped ended up. Stage-diving visitors put increasing pressure on the people on the ground, causing suffocation death.

“We retreated”

After the disaster, both Pearl Jam and the organization of the festival faced reproaches. Both sides were ultimately not convicted, but Gossard says the band went into hiding after the events.

“We retired and got angry after so many articles stating that we would have been responsible. Our words didn’t help anyone at the time. We hid and hoped it wasn’t our fault. We’ve been trying to escape that hiding ever since. “

“Forever in the shadow of your pain”

The band has met relatives of the victims in recent years and expresses the hope that they will never have to experience what the families of the deceased had to experience.

“We will forever be in the shadow of your pain and loss and have accepted it. At the same time, we feel blessed to be able to share that place with others. The place created by the loss of those nine young men.”

After the Roskilde disaster, a worldwide ban on internship pigeons was introduced. Security measures at festivals were also tightened.
