Authorities in New York state have killed the famous squirrel. On Wednesday they arrested the animal after an anonymous tip.

Peanut is a social media star and yes over half a million followers on Instagram. The rodent has helped its owner Mark Longo (34) rise to fame over the past seven years. But keeping wild animals without a license is illegal in New York State. Longo admitted that he broke the law and, according to media reports, said he wanted to submit appropriate documents.
He had also been keeping a raccoon named Fred for a few months. Longo explained that he wanted to release the injured animal back into the wild as soon as he could recover. The raccoon was also taken in and euthanized.

Anyone who has contact with Peanut should see a doctor
Both animals should now be tested for rabies. Peanut had bitten an investigator during the arrest at Longo’s home in Pine City. Authorities are now recommending that “anyone who has been in contact with the animals seek medical attention.”
