Peak travel time at Zurich Airport | Abroad

Traffic – One of the busiest weekends of the year at Zurich Airport started off without a hitch: the lines in front of the check-in counters were long, but according to the airport, there were enough staff ready.

With the start of the holidays in the cantons of Zurich and Aargau, the last schools in Switzerland were also closed for the summer. The hustle and bustle that showed up in the halls of Zurich Airport on Saturday was correspondingly large.

On Saturday and Sunday, between 80,000 and 90,000 passengers will depart, arrive or transfer via it, as reported by Flughafen Zürich AG on request. At the beginning of July, the company had already recorded the start of the holiday season at the peak of the day.

The high passenger volume has not led to any problems so far, as an airport spokeswoman for the Keystone-SDA news agency said on request at noon. There were no major delays and there were enough staff on duty. The mood is cheerful; the travelers would be happy to be able to fly on vacation again.

Swissport handles 36,000 pieces of luggage

The high passenger volume also challenged handling: on Saturday alone, Swissport, as the largest provider, handled a good 38,000 passengers who checked in around 36,000 pieces of luggage, as Raphael Grundmann, deputy station manager, recorded in a video interview with Keystone-SDA.

The company is well positioned for such peak days in order to be able to cope with the regular flight schedule, said Grundmann. However, if there are irregularities due to the weather or other events, there may not be enough staff to absorb them.

According to Grundmann, the clearance was a little slower than usual. This is partly because a lot of families are on the road and people are also traveling who don’t fly that often and are therefore a little less experienced. However, the goal remains that “we get every passenger on vacation on time”.

Swissport and Zurich Airport therefore recommended that the many travelers plan enough time. You should be at the airport up to three hours before departure.
