The sit-in has been going on for an uninterrupted month in Gerona, where despite multiple requests, the head of the investigative body refuses to leave her position. In fact, she has not even met with representatives of the indigenous peoples.
Despite this, the activities have not stopped and today a mass was held at the site to remember the martyrs who advocated for justice, human rights and defended democracy.
“The good news of Jesus tells us that we are all called to be saints,” said the priest who officiated at the Eucharist and pointed out that the resistance promoted by the authorities for democracy, for justice and for the common good is “holiness.” ”.
The religious displays marked this new day of demonstrations in the entity run by Consuelo Porras, since an altar was placed in front of the building. Even Alida Vicente, authority of the Indigenous Mayor’s Office of Palín, left flowers at the site.
Separately, the indigenous peoples announced on All Saints’ Day that on November 3 and 4 they will carry out a massive mobilization towards the capital city, to protect democracy.
The ancestral authorities called for all social sectors to join the activity. The peaceful resistance, according to the indigenous delegates, will continue until it is necessary.

In Alta Verapaz, a group of citizens asked to continue the fight to recover democracy in Guatemala and demanded the resignation of Porras and the prosecutors involved in the coup d’état.

The representatives of the indigenous peoples began a call to all sectors to join the sit-in, which is why they invited university students, health professionals, teachers, among others, to participate in the march.
“Let’s join forces, because we, the representatives of the different indigenous peoples, are here. “We have not given up,” they expressed in a conference that took place in front of the Constitutional Court.
The delegates of the indigenous communities stated that they are not divided, as has been speculated. “They have called us extortionists and kidnappers, but the people of Guatemala are witnesses that this is not the case,” the authorities said through the indigenous mayor of Sololá, Misrahí Xoquic Chiroy.
The mobilization will take place after a month of peaceful resistance, in which various social groups, mainly indigenous peoples, have demanded the resignation of Consuelo Porras, Rafael Curruchiche, Cinthia Monterroso and Fredy Orellana.
However, the ancestral authorities indicated that there are Community Development Councils (Cocodes), community mayors and auxiliaries who are being coerced into taking away projects if they join the resistance.
“We are more than those who are intimidating us. We must take the opportunity to raise our voices and not let certain characters silence us,” they added, while stating that they will continue to demonstrate peacefully in Gerona.
It is not a crime to fight for democracy. It is a right that belongs to the entire population. Let what we have already chosen be respected. We do not want there to be a coup d’état,” they noted.
Citizen support
A group of Guatemalans in national and foreign territory stated that the “hopeful” transformation that Guatemala is experiencing, since what happened in October, is due to the exemplary civic struggle called, undertaken and led by the ancestral authorities.
“It has been correctly said that this fight transcends political parties and the authorities elected to occupy public functions starting in January 2024,” they added in an open letter.
In the text they stressed that what has been experienced since October 2, when citizen protests began throughout the country, has become a “movement of national significance” that gives “clear support to the effort to build” a multiethnic, multicultural society. and multilingual as established in the Peace Accords.
“We call on Guatemalans, residents inside or outside the national territory, to stay on this path, with the conviction that, with organization, solidarity and national unity, we will be able to forge the new spring of peace, democracy and development,” they concluded. .
