Peace Stop: Activities and Events in Vlaardingen for Peace and Human Rights

The Liesveld 126 storefront is still available as a Peace Stop until Saturday, January 6, 2024. “This is the place to pause and reflect on events in the world, in Europe, in the Netherlands and in Vlaardingen,” says initiator Han Raeijmaekers of the PAX Embassy of Peace. The Peace Stop is open every Wednesday and Saturday between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. “On Wednesdays, school classes and coffee and language groups are received, on Saturdays there is always a varied program with live music from professional musicians and choirs from, for example, the Netherlands, Spain, Argentina and Ukraine. With plenty of room for meeting and conversation, says Han Raeijmaekers. “Events related to human rights also take place at the Peace Stop on a regular basis. There are also petitions and material to write, sign and add something substantive.” Because that is what the Peace Stop is all about: meeting each other, listening, learning and actually doing something about peace. “In the Peace Stop there is no ‘Peace with war’. Colorful paintings and short films about peace can be viewed continuously. In short, anyone who wants to see the good in others is very welcome, both adults and youth.

Rotary club creates a sea of tulips in Mrija

Several Ukrainian children and their parents in Mrija, the temporary neighborhood in Vlaardingen where a thousand Ukrainian refugees are accommodated, recently planted approximately 1,500 tulip bulbs by the Rotary Club Vlaardingen 80. The event was in support of a global Rotary initiative called End Polio Now, which aims to eradicate polio for good. In the spring a beautiful sea of tulips should appear in this district. The proceeds from the sale of the tulip bulbs were used to raise money to purchase vaccines for the fight against polio. Rotary Club Vlaardingen 80 organizes an annual planting campaign to draw attention to this good cause. Since 2014, Dutch Rotary Clubs have sold more than 88 thousand boxes of tulips, which has resulted in more than € 2.7 million for the fight against polio. This amount is sufficient to vaccinate 23 million children. Official victory over polio will be declared once the disease has been eradicated worldwide for three years. Until then, Rotary clubs will continue with global vaccination drives
