Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
DPR RI politician from the PDI-P faction (PDIP), Charles Honoris, reminded the President Joko Widodo about the threat of ‘flash flood’ corona virus (Covid-19) if the spike in cases is not handled properly.
“Please, Mr. Jokowi, the condition is an emergency. Don’t let this get worse and in the end we are all swept away by the ‘flash flood’, which in fact we already know the threat, but we are too late to deal with it,” Charles said via a written message, Sunday (27/6).
Charles assessed that the implementation of Community Activity Restrictions or micro PPKM is no longer effective in reducing the rate of virus transmission. This makes the bed occupancy rate (BOR) of hospitals in five provinces on the island of Java already above 80 percent.
He also urged Jokowi to immediately implement a national Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) policy or lockdown in Java.
With this policy, he explained, there will be a total closure of schools, shopping centers and offices. Except in a handful of certain vital business sectors.
“We certainly don’t want, if without massive social restrictions, other provinces such as in Eastern Indonesia, where the BOR of health facilities is still green, become chaotic like the current health facilities on the island of Java,” he added.
“Mr. Jokowi, our health facilities downstream will not be strong enough to reduce ‘flash flooding’ if the transmission rate from upstream is very heavy. We must contain the rapid transmission of Covid-19 upstream as early as possible with massive social restrictions,” he continued.
A number of parties have previously submitted criticisms of the micro PPKM policy, one of which was the Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI).
The General Chairperson of PPNI, Harif Fadhillah, asked the government to be firm in dealing with the surge in cases of Covid-19 transmission.
He also asked that government policies not only play the title of policy but are weak in implementation. According to him, the daily positive case record shows the government failed to control the pandemic from the start.
On Saturday (26/6), the Covid-19 Handling Task Force recorded the addition of 21,095 new cases. It was the highest daily positive record since the pandemic hit Indonesia, last March 2020.
Currently, the total number of positive confirmed cases of Covid-19 is 2,093,962. Meanwhile, a total of 1,842,457 people recovered and 56,729 died.
