PDIP Founder Sabam Sirait Dies

Politician and founder of the Indonesian Democratic Party of StrugglePDIP), Sabam Sirait, died at the age of 85 years on Wednesday (29/9).

“He has returned to his Father in Heaven: Mr. Sabam Sirait, Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 22:37 WIB at Siloam Karawaci Hospital,” said the Sabam Sirait family statement.

However, the family did not explain further the cause of Sabam Sirait’s death.

Sabam is survived by his wife, four children, and eight grandchildren.

Born in Tanjungbalai, North Sumatra, on October 13, 1936, Sabam has been active in politics since the mid 1960s.

He had served as secretary general of the Indonesian Christian Party (Parkindo) for the period 1963-1967 and officially became secretary general in 1967-1973.

On January 10, 1973, Sabam co-founded the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) and served as secretary general of the party for three terms from 1973 to 1986.

After that, he founded the PDI-P in September 1998. He then became a member of the PDI-P’s Central Advisory Council (Deperpu) in 1998-2008.

Before he died, Sabam was still a member of the Indonesian Regional Representative Council for the 2019-2024 period.

During his career, Sabam has also received the Bintang Mahaputra Utama award.
