PDI-P DPP Chair Puan Maharani Agrees with Grand Coalition Discourse for 2024 Election

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – PDI-P DPP Chair Puan Maharani said she agreed with the grand coalition discourse which contained a combination of the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB) and the Great Indonesia Awakening Coalition (KIR) to face the 2024 Election.

What’s more, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that KIB and KIR are compatible if they are united.

“Yes, I agree,” Puan said when met at the DPR Building, Senayan, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (4/4/2023).

However, Puan threw down the conditions for the grand coalition discourse. According to him, a grand coalition must be formed with the same ideals and vision and mission for Indonesia.

He considered that when all the political parties in the grand coalition agree on the goals to be achieved, then the coalition can be formed.

Puan also admitted that she had seen Jokowi’s statement regarding support for the coalition.

“I watched on TV, Pak Jokowi said that please the ketum political parties who run it, the President will be a listener, that’s what I watched on TV,” he said.

“So, what is best for the nation and state is best for the people, of course PDI-P will definitely support this,” continued Puan.

Regarding the PDI-P who did not attend the meeting of the five parties, Puan ensured that PDI-P would be present at the next opportunity.

Because, he said, when the KIB-KIR met at the PAN headquarters on Sunday (2/4/2023), PDI-P Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri was unable to attend.

“So, God willing, on another occasion the PDI-Perjuangan will attend,” he added.

Previously, President Jokowi immediately said the word “suitable” if KIB and KIR unite to face the 2024 elections.

The KIB is a combination of the Golkar Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN), and the United Development Party (PPP). While KIR was formed by the Gerindra Party and the National Awakening Party (PKB).

“Suitable. I just said it fits. It is up to the party leaders or a combination of party leaders. For the good of the country, for the good of the nation for the people, matters that are related, can be discussed, it will be better,” said Jokowi after the “Ramadan gathering with the President of the Republic of Indonesia” which was held at the PAN DPP Office, Pancoran, South Jakarta, Sunday (2/4 /2023).

Jokowi emphasized that he would not interfere in merging the coalition.

“It was the party leaders who spoke. I’m just listening to it,” Jokowi said.

Meanwhile, General Chairperson of the Gerindra Party, Prabowo Subianto, did not want to give a clear answer regarding the plan to merge KIB and KIR.

“Yes, we will see the process later, but for sure it will be intense,” said Prabowo.

The gathering event initiated by PAN was attended by PAN chairman Zulkifli Hasan as the host, then Golkar chairman Airlangga Hartanto, general chairman of the Gerindra party Prabowo Subianto, PPP general chairman Muhammad Mardiono, and PKB general chairman Muhaimin Iskandar.
