The triple-20 is suddenly green instead of red at the Darts World Cup this year. This has everything to do with a sponsorship deal from darts association PDC, dartboard manufacturer Winmau and bookmaker Paddy Power.
For Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith, the new color will take some getting used to. Ever since they started playing darts, the triple-20 box was always red. Now it is suddenly dark green from December 15 to January 3, just slightly darker than the adjacent triple-5 and triple-1.
Dartbond PDC denies that money is the only reason for the color change. For example, the association points to research that shows that the color green can be perceived more accurately than red. This would make it easier to throw the maximum score.
PDC CEO Matthew Porter is happy with the change. “If, after thirty years, a change like this can raise the level of the sport, and it also directly benefits the health of the players, then we owe it to them to try.”
“We saw 901 180s at last year’s tournament and this year we may break the 1,000 mark for the first time ever,” Porter continued. “It’s great to be working with Paddy Power and we hope the players are as excited as we are.”
The draw for the Darts World Cup will take place on Monday at 5:30 PM. Michael Smith is the defending champion at the tournament.
Irish bookmaker @paddypower have today revealed an innovative new-look dartboard ahead of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship, which will take place from December 15 to January 3.
