PCSX2 Emulator Achieves 99% Compatibility with PlayStation 2 Games

The PCSX2 emulator for the PlayStation 2 has reached a new milestone: it can now play more than 99% of the console’s massive library. According to the project website, the majority of PS2 games can now be played on an emulator, which is 97.92%, and 1.23% of games can be emulated perfectly. These two figures add up to 99.15% of the best-selling console’s lineup, which can now be played through emulation.

To be somewhat clear, while the PCSX2 emulator can play virtually the entire PS2 library, only 1.23% of the “perfect” games will be able to run without any glitches. The remaining 97.92% of “playable” games may experience minor inconsistencies at some point, but will generally provide a smooth experience. However, this is still a phenomenal feat for an emulator considering the legacy of the PlayStation 2.

At the moment, the developers of this project are working on a new stable version of PCSX2. Stable releases are few and far between, but they are thoroughly tested. On the other hand, Nightly releases are launched whenever changes are made to the emulator to provide the latest features, albeit at the risk of introducing bugs.

PCSX2 was originally launched in 2002 when the technology’s capabilities were limited. After two decades, the development has reached a new milestone, allowing players to experience the classics. Backward compatibility has been a hot topic for Sony, given that the company hasn’t focused on it in a way that preserves its gaming history.
