Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR is a test used to detect Covid-19 patients.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has called for the price of Covid-19 test services to be lowered. PT Kimia Farma Tbk, said that it had lowered the PCR test from Rp900,000 to Rp500,000 starting tomorrow. The highest reference for the PCR test is IDR 495,000 in Java-Bali and IDR 525,000 in other areas starting from Tuesday (17/8) tomorrow.

The PCR test is considered to be the most effective viral sample testing technique for dealing with the coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, the cause of Covid-19.

Interestingly, this test was invented by Kary Mullis in the 1980s. Mullis is an American biochemist.

In 1983, he had the idea to carry out a DNA testing technique. Mullis realized that repeated use of DNA polymerase would trigger a chain reaction that would amplify certain DNA segments. Which is then referred to as the PCR test.

PCR tests use various DNA sources to determine if a person has Covid-19, including through skin, hair, saliva, and blood.

Because of his discovery, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993.
