In the wake of israel’s recent assault on Gaza during a supposedly agreed-upon ceasefire, international outrage has been mounting. The Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) has been at the forefront of condemning these actions, calling for global intervention to halt the violence.Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Lara Feldman, a renowned conflict resolution specialist and Middle East analyst, to discuss the implications of these events and the urgent need for international action.
Senior Editor (SE): Dr. Feldman, thank you for joining us today. Can you paint a picture of the situation in Gaza post-ceasefire announcement?
Dr. Lara Feldman (DLF): Thank you for having me. Since the announced ceasefire, the situation in Gaza has indeed remained dire.Despite the agreement, Israeli forces have continued their attacks, resulting in over 100 deaths and hundreds of injuries, mostly civilians. The persistent violence underscores the desperate need for credible international intervention to ensure peace.
SE: The PBNU has strongly condemned Israel’s actions and called for international action. How important is their voice in the global response to this crisis?
DLF: The PBNU’s voice is indeed significant. As one of the world’s largest Muslim organizations, their condemnation of Israel’s violence echoes the sentiments of many across the globe. Their call for international action is a reminder that the Palestinian people are not alone in their struggle, and it can amplify the pressure on Israel to cease it’s aggressive actions.
SE: What role do you see for the international community in bringing an end to this conflict, notably in light of the recent violence?
DLF: The international community has a crucial role to play in ending this conflict. Firstly, they must hold Israel accountable for its violations of the ceasefire and international law. This includes sanctions,if necessary,to pressure Israel into ending its military operations. Secondly, they should facilitate a meaningful peace process, one that addresses the root causes of the conflict and ensures justice and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
SE: PBNU has urged Indonesia to advocate in global forums for resolution efforts. How can countries like Indonesia contribute to de-escalation and peace?
DLF: Indonesia, as a Non-Aligned Movement country and a prominent voice in the Muslim world, can play a significant role. They can advocate for a balanced and fair approach to peace, one that respects international law and the legitimate rights of both peoples. They can also support initiatives like the proposed international protection mission for Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
SE: What actions can individuals, such as our readers, take to support peace and justice in Palestine?
DLF: Individuals can make a difference by staying informed, raising awareness, and supporting organizations advocating for peace and human rights in Palestine. This includes contacting their elected officials, participating in peaceful protests, and supporting initiatives that promote dialog and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.
