Pays-Haut at the back of the pack

As of July 11, 36.70% of the inhabitants of the Pays-Haut Val-d’Alzette community of municipalities were fully vaccinated against Covid-19. In detail, vaccination coverage amounts to 20.6% for 20-39 year olds, 34.3% for 40-54 year olds, 57.4% for 55-64 year olds, 71.6% for 65-74 years and 70.6% for those 75 and over.

An overall vaccination rate down 4.2 points compared to the national average, but also compared to neighboring inter-municipal authorities. By way of comparison, the percentage of the population presenting a complete vaccination schedule was 40.20% in Portes-de-France Thionville, 43.4% in Cattenom and Environs, 41.22% in Orne-Confluences or even 41.4% in the Mosellan Arc.

Less vaccinated than in Luxembourg

The population of the Pays-Haut Val d’Alzette community of municipalities is the least well vaccinated in Moselle, ahead of that of the Val de Fensch urban community (35.70%). In Lorraine, only certain inter-municipal authorities in Meurthe-et-Moselle and Meuse are doing less well, such as the Cœur de Pays-Haut community of municipalities (35.70%). In the agglomeration community of Longwy, the figure is barely higher: 36.90% of the inhabitants are fully vaccinated.

The comparison with the Grand Duchy is not very flattering for the Val d’Alzette: in Luxembourg, 45.4% of residents had received their two doses on July 14 , according to the Ministry of Health (they are 50% ready today).

Explanations

Several factors can explain the delay conceded by the population of the Pays-Haut. First of all, there is the relative distance from the vaccination centers: since mid-June, the closest is a twenty-minute drive away (Mexy). The one in Thionville is a thirty-five minute drive away, as is the one in Serémange-Erzange, which does not encourage making an appointment. A second explanation lies in the large proportion of cross-border workers among the population: since the beginning of July, they can register on a waiting list in order to be vaccinated free of charge in the Grand Duchy. But this explanation also applies to other border intercommunalities, without this affecting their vaccination rate.
