It’s under the title Steps that the association Art and History-Pays de Fougères releases its annual publication. It is a real 180-page book, the result of an important work of research and putting into perspective the history of the country of Fougères. Among its sources of information is also prominently The Chronicle of Ferns, often cited.
On the occasion of the centenary of the 1920s, the 33rd publication Art et Histoire returns to the carefree period that followed the Great War: the Roaring Twenties, a long stroll in the Paris of the 1920s between cabarets and music. halls, among inventors and artisans of a new art of living or exalted artists. And the breath of modernity is being felt in the province: the Fougeraise press echoes it.
This issue focuses on the history of the land of Fougères in the last century and depicts the distress and courage of the populations driven from their homes in 1939, like those of the Fougerais during the summer of 1944. In the continuity of the previous issues , the review recounts the local Fêtes-Dieu, revealing religious sensitivity and a great community moment.
The metamorphoses of Ferns
The walk in the old Saint-Louis district leads the reader to rue des Prés and place Carnot and opens a glimpse of the metamorphoses of the city at the dawn of the 20th century: an architectural past which is not always cumbersome.
A century later, the urban architect Bernard Kaleski wanted to reconcile historical heritage, modernity and conviviality. Footwear is another resource in Fouger’s memory: the publication traces the adventure of the JB Martin manufacture, pages of labor, conquest and glory that the year 2020 has turned.
The third part offers a historical journey in the footsteps of artists and on the path of the Templars and Hospitallers of Saint-Jean who left several imprints in Brittany through their commanderies and their hospitals. The route gives a glimpse of grandiose and sometimes unusual achievements.
