Litigation between the family of basketball player Dāvis Bertāns and his former representatives of the basketball agency “BAA Rīga” has been repeatedly initiated in the Riga Regional Court. At last week’s court hearing, judge Dace Kantsone’s attempts to urge both parties to a settlement were unsuccessful, while BAA Rīga successfully secured new claims in an effort to recover ten percent of the basketball player’s multi-million dollar contracts.
The portal “Delfi” has already described the essence of a rather unique thing. “BAA Rīga” or “Basketball Development Agency Rīga” was an agency led by entrepreneur Mārtiņš Lauvas, which more than a decade ago began to gather several very talented young basketball players under its auspices. Most of them represented the children’s and youth basketball school “Rīga”, but the contractual obligations with the “BAA Rīga” players provided for the opportunity to obtain various services both for the development of a professional basketball player’s career and for non-sports purposes.
