Every season there are several cases in restaurants and accommodation that scandalize tourists. Familiar from this summer are the “air conditioner” fee, “additional ice”, “slice of lemon” and others. Therefore, the focus in tourism discussions is increasingly on service.
But do we know as consumers what our rights are when visiting establishments?

Charging customers for bathroom use is illegal
According to the regulation on the categorization of this type of objects, their owners are obliged to provide free access to the WC for customers, regardless of the type and category of the establishment. Unfortunately, there are still establishments that require customers to pay for the use of the bathroom.
The opening of non-alcoholic, beer and wine
Regardless of the type and category of the food and entertainment establishment, the waiters are obliged to open the bottles of soft drinks, beer and wine served to the customers. This obligation again derives from the by-law cited above. At the height of this summer, a customer complained to We the Consumers that he had seen an ad for a chance to win a prize for matching a certain symbol under the cap of a popular soda pop, ordered it, but it was brought to him unopened and he never realized what his luck was.
The ice – in a bowl with a metal clip
All establishments are required to ensure a constant supply of ice. This obligation does not seem to presuppose its additional charging – as was the case just recently, in which an establishment in Nessebar charged an ice cube at BGN 1. The serving of ice should be in a bowl with a metal clip, as an exception to this rule is allowed only for the establishments with one star.
The menu is served from the right, the order is accepted – from the left
Did you know that according to the regulations, the waiter serves the menu sheet with his right hand, on the right side of the guest. He waits and watches from the side of the table for the customer to make his choice and takes the order, if possible standing on the left side of the guest. If necessary, helps the customer in choosing food and drinks, makes recommendations and explains the dishes on the menu. If the preparation of some of the ordered dishes takes a long time, the waiter informs that their serving will be delayed.
These requirements again apply to absolutely all establishments and are definitely directly related to the standards and level of service.
Accommodation only on cleaned table
Sometimes we, as customers, also insist on the violation of the rule that check-in takes place only on a cleaned table. This usually happens when we rush to get a seat in the restaurant and offer the table to be prepared after we have already taken the seats around it. This is not right and not only poses risks for us, but also opens the door for waiters to engage in bad practices.
