Paying for music is hip again: streaming and vinyl sales highest in years | Inland

The Belgian music industry achieved a turnover of more than 90 million euros in 2021. That is 16 percent more than in the corona year 2020, but also higher than in the pre-corona period.

More than three quarters (78 percent) of that music sales are digital. In 2017, that was less than half. Streaming in particular appears to be immensely popular. With a share of 75 percent of the music turnover in our country, it is the main engine behind the turnover growth. Well-known platforms such as Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music and YouTube Music provide a wide range, user-friendliness and accessibility, according to the sector.

But physical music sales also increased in 2021, by almost a quarter compared to the corona year 2020. CDs were sold for 9.4 million euros. In 2018 that was still more than 22 million euros. Sales of CDs have been declining for years, while vinyl has recently been on the rise again, with sales in 2021 of 8.69 million euros or 78 percent more than a year earlier. The market share of vinyl and CDs is almost equally high: records account for 44.4 percent of physical sales, CDs for 48 percent. In 2019, CDs still accounted for 68 percent of physical sales
