Payday fans are getting new info about Payday 3 after years of waiting. Publisher Starbreeze Studios and developer Overkill Software revealed new details during the Payday 10th anniversary livestream.
Payday 3 is set in a “huge, living, representation” of New York City, says director Erik Wonnevi. Payday 2 was mainly set in Washington DC, while the original Payday was set in a fictional “Newport City” and in Miami.
Payday 3 takes place several years after the events of Payday 2, causing characters such as Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf to return from retirement to return to the criminal path.
The technology has not stood still since PayDay 2 and Starbreeze seems to want to go big in terms of gameplay. Software giants, cryptocurrency, mass surveillance and even the dark web are playing a role for the corridor. This is expressed, for example, in updated gadgets.
Concept art shown during the presentation also showed a fictitious New York bank called “Gold & Sharke Incorporated” which may be the location for a mission. The characters from Payday 3 stand in front of the building in their masks, while officers patrol in the distance.
Starbreeze did not show any gameplay or cinematics during the event. Wonnevi emphasizes that the new Unreal Engine will allow players to step into a “living, breathing” New York and see it “turn around” in chaos in response to the decisions you make as a heist crew.
Payday 3 is set to release on PC and consoles in 2023 “with more content and functionality being added well beyond the original release date.
