Retirement: How long should I pay off the mortgage to be as secure as possible?

I’m due to retire in two years. My wife (age 57) and I (age 63) would like to stay in our own home. Our property is currently still encumbered with financing at half of its value. How deep does a mortgage have to be to retire with peace of mind?

It is important that you have sufficient funds for the desired standard of living when you retire. This means that the expenses should, at best, be used to a small extent to service your housing costs. If there is a relatively low debt on your property, this circumstance is usually sufficient.
