TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Clinical nutrition specialist dr. Cindiawaty Josito Pudjiadi, Sp.GK from the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) said intake of nutrition incomplete can accelerate the aging process in the elderly.
“Complete and balanced nutrition is number one, nothing should be discounted. If nutrition is not complete, something is damaged, the aging process will accelerate,” said Cindiawaty.
The aging process can cause health problems because cell function and the immune system decline. For the elderlyIn general, the main nutrient that is not always fulfilled is protein. Therefore, he reminded the elderly to ensure that the food they eat every day contains complete and balanced nutrition, such as carbohydrates, protein, good fats, as well as fiber from vegetables and fruit.
If the elderly cannot eat a lot of solid food, the rest of the other nutritional needs can be interspersed with fluids such as milk which contains protein. Heart disease is one of the risks that the elderly must be aware of because the risk increases with age. According to Cindi, nutrition with high protein content and olive fruit extract is one of the right nutrients to help maintain muscle mass and heart health.
“Hydroxytyrosol contained in olives can help prevent the formation of atherothrombotic plaques due to free radicals which are the main cause of heart disease or disorders of peripheral blood vessels, also maintain smooth blood circulation, “he said.
Besides nutrition, he reminded to keep exercising and actively moving for at least 30 minutes per day to keep the body healthy. “A complete ecosystem, starting from a health check up to choosing the right nutrition, is something that needs to be considered to support the aging process to stay active and fit,” he said.
