On Friday, a sailing yacht was damaged after being hit by an orca fifteen times. The twelve-meter yacht was towed to port and the helm restored. A sailing yacht from the Spanish Coast Guard also fell prey to two orcas at the beginning of September. This ship was damaged at the helm. The British newspaper The Guardian shows the images.

One of the crew was injured. He sustained bruises after his fall. 23-year-old sailor Victoria Morris was also terrified when she was attacked by a group of nine orcas. “The noise was very frightening. They rammed into the keel. I was afraid the boat was going to capsize, ”Morris reports to The Guardian.

Tooth marks

The blows of the animals broke the rudder and an auxiliary engine failed. To her call for help, it took another hour for the Coast Guard to arrive. The animals had already chosen the open sea by then. The underside of her fifty-foot sailboat was badly damaged and covered with dental marks.

Scientists face a great mystery and have no explanation for the behavior of the animals. “I have never heard of such attacks. The fact that an orca bites a piece out of a fiberglass helm is downright bizarre, ”says researcher Rocío Espada of the University of Seville. He has been researching the behavior of the migrating orcas for years. “That ramming indicates stress. The waters are full of fishing nets. Perhaps a calf has become entangled in it ”, the researcher speculates.
