Paxton Joins Multi-State Coalition Demanding Protection of Seminary Religious Freedom

AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has joined a legal brief a friend; along with 15 other states, to fight for the rights of Fuller Theological Seminary, which expelled two students who entered into same-sex marriages after they had been admitted. The Seminary’s religious freedom, which serves as the foundation for expelling students, is not only protected under the First Amendment, but also under the 2020 Department of Education policy on religious freedom. However, former students advocate a much narrower interpretation, and ultimately an incorrect and unconstitutional interpretation, of the First Amendment and federal regulations.

“Fuller Theological Seminary is clearly a religious organization, and it should come as no surprise that same-sex marriages conflict with their biblical beliefs about sex and marriage, which are expressly outlined in their community ethics and moral standards that all students , including those who were expelled, accept, ”said Attorney General Paxton. “The Constitution requires the government to protect the religious beliefs of its citizens and organizations like Fuller, and it is that simple. This attack on Fuller is only the latest volley in America’s war on religious freedom, and I will not tolerate it. ”
