Judge Pavlina Panova is the new chairman of the Constitutional Court. She was elected today at a court hearing, the institution said. She is the first elected woman to chair the court.
The session was attended by 11 constitutional judges.
Panova replaces Boris Velchev, whose term expired yesterday.
Pavlina Panova was elected a judge in the Constitutional Court from the judge’s quota in 2018. Prior to that, she was a criminal judge and head of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Cassation. He was also an ad hoc judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for many years.
He ran for chairman of the Supreme Court of Cassation seven years ago, but the SJC then elected Lozan Panov.
