It was an election without a choice: In the mayoral election in Donaueschingen (Schwarzwald-Baar district), the incumbent Erik Pauly (51) was re-elected. The non-party lawyer was the only candidate and, according to the city, got 98 percent of the vote. The turnout in the city of 22,300 inhabitants was just 25 percent. Pauly has been head of the town hall since 2014. At that time, the lawyer from Freiburg was able to unite 55.6 percent of the votes in the first ballot.
The residential city on a high plateau on the edge of the Black Forest is a popular destination because of its location at the source of the Danube. It is also known for the Donaueschinger Musiktage. The traditional festival for new music celebrated its 100th birthday this year. Donaueschingen is the second largest city in the Black Forest-Baar district after Villingen-Schwenningen.
