Paulin Obame Nguema:Life and death of a fine strategist Paulin Obame Nguema:Life and death of a fine strategist

Libreville, Tuesday December 12, 2023 (Infos Gabon) – The former Gabonese Prime Minister and doctor died yesterday at the age of 88 after a busy political career.

We knew his state of health had become worrying in recent years given his somewhat advanced age. At the age of 88, Paulin Obame Nguema died yesterday at his home in the Batterie IV district of Libreville. Like a blade, the announcement of his death plunged the Gabonese political scene into turmoil. The deceased had left an indelible mark on the history of Gabon throughout his life.

Former Prime Minister under the late Omar Bongo Ondimba from October 1994 to January 199, Paulin Obame Nguema distinguished himself as a discreet man certainly, but above all a fine connoisseur of issues and efficient in his work. Appointed to this position following the “Paris Accords” between power and opposition, he particularly distinguished himself as a meticulous and patient man. During the 1997 elections, he demonstrated impartiality and openness so that democracy would prevail. He did not rush into managing a situation so as not to make hasty decisions which in the long run could be detrimental to the progress of the country. Preferring to stay in the back office, he did not like to put himself in front of the stage. He demonstrated this by refusing to take the reins of the Gabonese Football Federation and by gradually withdrawing from the spotlight in favor of those younger than him.

A doctor trained in Bordeaux in the 1950s, he decided to return to the country in the 1960s at the call of Omar Bongo to contribute to the development of Gabon. In addition to being a fine political maneuverer, Paulin Obame had not turned his back on his first love. Even as a PM, he never hesitated to put on his white coat and gloves and arm himself with his scalpel or syringe to save lives. Her figure was so regular at the La Peyrie Health Center (PMI).
